Mickey Mansell defeated Paul Mein
(Dungannon) 5-2 in the final to take the 4th
annual Tyrone Individual Darts Championship title on
Saturday evening when the Clonoe player was crowned
champion for the first time in the four year history.
Over 60 Tyrone based players made
there way to the Coach Inn Omagh for the fourth staging
of Tyrone individual darts championship with players
representing pub and club venues throughout the county
from Strabane, Newtownstewart, Omagh, Tattyreagh,
Fintona, Eskra, Dromore, Clogher, Augher, Dungannon,
Coalisland all trying to be crowned champion as well as
trying to defeat the current champion Felix Mc Brearty
who has hell the title for the past two years and who
was in tremendous form leading up to this years event.
Throughout the day the Clonoe
player Mickey Mansell was in brilliant form recording
big finishes, a lot of 180’s as well as checking out on
11, 13 and 15 dart games which can only be describe as
TV standard.
Mickey started his title victory
campaign with a 4-0 win over Gareth Mc Gonigle (Omagh)
in the last-64, followed that up with a superb 4-1
victory over the 2004 champion Colin Strong (Clabby) in
the last-32.
Mickey’s toughest game came in the
last-16 when the Clonoe player was pushed all the way
right down to the wire by a real Tyrone dart legend
Danny Mc Callion (Strabane) who just missed the
bull-eyes for a 130 checkout for victory but up steps
Mickey who finished and fall over the line on this
occasion on a 4-3 score-line.
The ¼-finals and semi-finals once
again seen Mickey produce brilliant darts to move into
his second final in the prestigious event of the Tyrone
individual darts championship by recording fantastic
wins over Davy Harris (Dungannon, 4-1) and great 4-0 win
over Strabane’s Joe Lynsie in the semi-finals…
In the final Mickey would come up
against another East Tyrone player and former N. Ireland
international Paul Mein from Dungannon who also played
superb darts throughout the tournament to reach his
first Tyrone Individual Darts Championship final also
recording great results along the way which included a
4-2 victory over the current champion Felix Mc Brearty
in the semi-finals…..
The final seen Mickey Mansell get
out of the blocks early to race into a four nil lead
only to see Paul pull the next two back before Mickey
claimed victory in the next game to run out a 5-2 winner
in front of the large crowd to be crowned the 2007
Tyrone Individual Darts Championship champion for the
first time in the four year history of the event and
receive the £500 winners cheque and the perpetual
crystal trophy for his efforts….
The organisers would like to take
this opportunity in thanking each and every venue for
hosting qualifying heats in there own venues throughout
the year, to all the players and board markers who where
tremendous in there approach and support in this years
event, to all the sports editors from newspapers
throughout the county for there help in promoting this
fantastic event week in, week out and last but no way
least to Connor Quinn the manager and his staff of the
Coach Inn venue for the warm welcome they give to each
and every player and spectators who made these
championships a great success.
The organisers also stated at the
presentation they would still like to see and will be
trying to get the towns and villages that wasn’t
represented in this championships to come forward next
year to get involved. We would like to see venues come
forward and take part from Castlederg, Drumquinn,
Cookstown, Moortown, Beragh, Ballygawley, Fivemiletown,
Stewartstown just to mention a few….
